Tostada Bowls

Mexican food is a family favorite in my household. We love eating out too, but sometimes we like to all hang out at home and enjoy the same great food as well. Getting authentic tasting Mexican food can be very difficult. We are also extremely limited in shopping. Our only grocery stores are Wal-Mart, Hy-Vee, and Aldi. I usually shop at Wal-Mart or Hy-Vee.

I decided I wanted to have Taco Salads at home, only one problem I don’t exactly have the equipment to make taco salad shells. They can be fried or baked and made very easily with either a piece to sit the shell into in the oven, or a metal piece to use in a fryer. I do not have either. And I am not positive where to purchase. So, I had to go on a search for Taco Salad shells at the store. I was at our local Hy-Vee in Kirksville and did not find any. I then went to Wal-Mart and was lucky enough to find Rio Rancho Tostada Bowls. The package comes with Four 6″ Bowls. The shelf was packed with them. Me, knowing how shells easily break, opened the boxes before I put them in my cart. And, to know surprise, the first five that I took off the shelf were broken inside the box. I can’t tell you whether it was fault of the stock man, delivery personal, or the manufacturer. It could simply be poor packaging. The shells are stacked, wrapped in plastic, and have a piece of cardboard around them. That’s it. Eventually I found a box that had shells in good condition and purchased it. I took them home and made Taco Salads. They were really easy to use. I preheated the over 350 degrees and placed them on a cookie sheet, baked them for 2 minutes, and then stuffed them. The shells were delicious.

Overall, Rio Rancho Tostada Bowls are a great product. I think some changes could be made with the package. I also recommend opening the box to check them at your local market prior to purchasing them. Rio Rancho also has a stamp on the box for a mail-in-rebate. It really isn’t a rebate per say, instead a $1 off coupon. You just have to clip your UPC and fill out the form and mail them in for the coupon. I liked the product and will probably purchase it again because nothing else is available. And… I am still on a search for the tool to make them at home.
